SIMULATIONS OF UNSTEADY AIRWAKES BEHIND SHIPS IN MOTION

W.X. Yuan¹, A. Wall¹, R. Lee¹; ¹National Research Council Canada, Canada

Since ship motion effects on the airwake could possibly play an important role when large amplitude ship motions are present, the effect of ship motion on the airwake is being investigated at NRC using both computational and experimental simulations. The numerical component of this investigation considers delayed detached eddy simulations based on the freeware OpenFOAM for the Canadian Patrol Frigate in motion. The results from computations and experimental measurements for the ship at both static and motion conditions are cross-compared against each other.
