THE D8 AIRCRAFT CONCEPT AND ITS BOUNDARY LAYER INGESTION BENEFIT

The aerodynamic benefit of boundary layer ingestion (BLI) was quantified in a combined experimental and computational approach for the D8 “double-bubble” aircraft. Wind tunnel experiments on a 1:11 scale model show an 8 to 10% reduction in cruise power from BLI. These provide the first back-to-back assessment of the BLI benefits for a civil aircraft.
