RESEARCH DEVELOPMENTS IN NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION AND STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING FOR THE SUSTAINMENT OF COMPOSITE AEROSPACE STRUCTURES AT NASA

K.E. Cramer, NASA, United States

This paper will present an overview of NASA’s applications of advanced aerospace composites as well as the NDE and SHM technologies being developed for their characterization and sustainment. SHM technologies are of particular interest for vehicle sustainment during long duration space flights where use of conventional NDE may be impossible. Finally, use of simulation tools for optimizing and validating these techniques will also be discussed.
