WEIGHT REDUCTION OF CYLINDRICAL GRID STRUCTURES USING AXIAL-HELICAL-DESIGN

Cylindrical grid structures with helical and circumferential ribs are used in space engineering since several decades. Mostly their benefits regarding weight and cost were compared to the aluminum structures which they replaced. In this study it is shown how further weight reduction can be achieved by using an axial-helical rib design.
