INFLUENCE OF AIRCRAFT TYPE AND ORDER ON FUEL SAVINGS GAINED BY TWO-AIRCRAFT FORMATIONS

The work investigates the potential fuel savings gained by two-aircraft formations using trajectory analysis and surrogate modeling. It will be shown that in terms of maximum fuel savings favorable aircraft combinations exist and that for a specific formation geometry the order of the aircraft in the formation is subject to change depending on formation speed and altitude.
