EFFECTIVENESS OF VORTEX GENERATORS IN HIGHLY 3D FLOWS

H.S. Mudhar, City University London, United Kingdom

Triangular vane vortex generators have demonstrated the ability to control 3D flow separation on a highly swept wing. Their performance was governed by the height with respect to the local boundary layer thickness, orientation to the incoming streamline and spanwise spacing. Detailed LDA measurements suggested that if not optimised, some configurations can act as a source of excrescence drag.
