GEOMETRIC ROUGHNESS EFFECTS ON THE AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF A SPINNING CYLINDER IN CROSSFLOW

S. Prince¹, J. Holt¹, P. Episkopou¹; ¹Cranfield University, United Kingdom

An experimental and computational study has been performed to investigate the effect of specific geometric roughness configurations on the aerodynamic characteristics of a spinning cylinder in crossflow. A cylinder with spanwise ribs was found to provide considerably higher lift to drag ratios compared with the smooth surface cylinder or the other cylinder roughness configurations tested.
