SIMULATION OF UNSTEADY SHIP AIRWAKES USING OPENFOAM

W. Yuan¹, R. Lee¹, A. Wall¹; ¹National Research Council Canada, Canada

The operation of helicopters from and onto naval ships is a challenging task for pilots. One reason is the fact that the landing deck is immersed in the highly-turbulent ship airwake. This paper presents delayed detached eddy simulations (DDES) of unsteady ship airwakes. After validation of the computed results against the wind tunnel data for bow winds, cross-wind cases and ship motion effects are examined. The data can be used in flight simulation to aid pilot training for shipboard helicopter operations.
