Coupled micromechanics/finite element models were developed for characterising the impact damage resistance and compression-after-impact (CAI) residual-strength of novel aerospace sandwich structures. Predictions for progressive impact damage and CAI strength, obtained for a variety of impact scenarios, were in close agreement with trials comprising of strain gage/optical imaging measurements.
