This paper addresses the use of dynamic roughness to favorably alter the flow physics of the boundary layer. The roughness has the ability to expand and contract at specific frequencies and amplitudes such that flow separation is delayed or eliminated. These improvements can improve the aerodynamic characteristics of airfoils
