This paper discusses stable tearing during the fatigue of an aerospace aluminium alloy. This phenomenon is not usually addressed in fatigue crack growth prediction, and the investigations aims to define onset and arrest conditions to develop such a prognostic capability for the crack “jumps” which can occur in service.
