Trajectory optimization is an optimal transfer problem. Different optimization techniques are discussed and compared to show their merits and limitations. The optimal trajectories in different phases of flight, i.e. trajectories in horizontal plane, vertical climb trajectories, are analyzed using the Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle.
