A FLOW VISUALISATION STUDY OF THE DYNAMIC STALLING OF TWO WING PLANFORMS

Keywords: flow visualisation, dynamic stalling, wing planforms

This paper presents the results of a flow visualisation study conducted at the University of Glasgow. Two wing plan forms subject to pitching motions through dynamic stall are considered; a straight rectangular wing and a rectangular wing with swept tips. From this, it is possible to begin to examine the complex vortical interactions which dominate three-dimensional dynamic stall. In particular, images presented illustrate the manner in which the tip vortices influence the development and convection of the dynamic stall vortex. Differences in the nature of stall on the two wings are discussed.
